Prof. Christoph Meinel - Biographical Notes

Univ. Prof. Dr. Christoph Meinel, born in 1954, is a full professor of computer science at the University of Trier. There, he directs the department for "Theoretical Concepts and Modern Implementations of Computer Science."

Christoph Meinel studied mathematics and informatics between the years from 1974 to 1979 at the Humboldt University in Berlin. After completing his doctoral thesis, he received the title Dr. rer. nat. From 1981 to 1991 he was scientific assistant in the Mathematics Department at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and head assistant at the Institute for Mathematics of the Scientific Academy, also in Berlin. In 1988, he habilitated on the subject of the complexity theory and received the title Dr. Sc. nat.. This thesis "Modified Branching Programs and Their Computational Power" was published as a monograph in volume 370 of the series "Lecture Notes in Computer Science" by Springer. In 1992 he was appointed as a full Professor at the University of Trier.

Christoph Meinel is either author, co-author, and / or editor of seven books and over 200 research reports, which have been published in recognized scientific periodicals and presented at international congresses. His main concern is with the several fields of research in telematics with main focus on internet security, secure telemedicine, VLSI design and complexity.

In addition to his position as a full professor at the University of Trier, he is also active in the contemporary realm of applied project research and development in the field of telematics. Under his leading, the Insitute for Telematics achieved the status of an independent research and development institute. Christoph Meinel was executive chairman and director of the Institute for Telematics from 1998 to 2002. Siemens and the Dresdener Bank are just some of the well-known research partners of the Institute. However, small and innovative companies, hospitals and banks in Germany and in neighbouring Luxembourg are also catered to by his institute.

In addition, Christoph Meinel is director of the Centre for Scientific Electronic Publishing WEP at the University of Trier. He is also a member of various supervisory boards and program committees. For example, he belongs to the supervisory board of International Encounters and Research Center for Informatics "Schloss Dagstuhl" in Germany and is also speaker for the professional group "Complexity" within the German Organization for Informatics GI. He is visiting professor at Luxembourg Internatinonal Advanced Studies in Information Technology, LIASIT. As organizer of various scientific symposiums, and as a member of different program committees, he has appeared at many international congresses. For example, the STACS Conference, which had worldwide significance, was organized in Trier, 1999, under his leadership.
